I feel like Christmas Day is a very family-orientated day, which makes it a little more personal and I’m not sure if I’m going to talk about it just yet. However, Christmas Eve in my household means friends and opening our home to a variety of people. Today I want to share my Christmas Eve traditions and what is being changed this year.
Christmas Eve morning means baking Mince Pies and setting the Mulled Wine to stew. By midday we have pastry practically coming out of our ears! My morning is usually spent chopping up the fruit to put in the mulled wine, and I can’t even drink it this year due to medication! I’m devastated.
This year, we’ve got a new way to spend lunchtime of Christmas Eve. My mum has two Scandinavian friends with children I have grown up with (I even went to school with one of them). They usually celebrate Christmas on the 24th together, and this year my family has been invited along too. I don’t have a clue what this will entail but I’m sure I will find out an hour or two!
If we weren’t going to see our friends for lunch, ordinarily I’d eat Pate on Toast and stick on a Christmas Film. I love watching The Snowman on Christmas Eve and I’m hoping I’ll still get the chance at some point today.
At 4pm, we will open our door to the neighbours. We are quite close with around 1/3 of our neighbours and for the last decade (maybe longer), they have all come over for mulled wine and mince pies for a couple of hours. Now I’m away at uni I don’t see them all that often so I’m really looking forward to seeing them.
Once the neighbours have left and we’ve cleared up, we have party food for dinner. This usually means cheese bites, battered prawns and onion bhajis with a glass of Bucks Fizz. We sit down in the lounge (the only meal of the year that is eaten in the lounge) to watch a Christmas Special or two.
I normally struggle to get to sleep on Christmas Eve night, and also struggle to stay asleep on Christmas Eve thanks to my love of Christmas so I wonder what time I’ll get to sleep tonight. I just know that I’ll be awake ridiculously early tomorrow morning!
Hope you’re all sorted for Christmas, because the big day is tomorrow!
