I like to get invested in characters. This is why I’ll always prefer the book to the film, and it’s why I prefer binging endless seasons of television shows over watching a movie or two. When I had two weeks off work back in April, I managed to binge a lot of television and I’ve added a lot of new shows to my list of things to watch so I thought I’d share that today. Some lifestyle to break up my beauty posts!
Recently Watched Television
I’ve not watched a lot of Netflix recently, to be honest I’m waiting for The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Orange Is The New Black to restart. However, one show that I really enjoyed and that a lot of other people have been loving is 13 Reasons Why. Whilst I’ve seen a lot of hate for this show and that it’s romanticising suicide, I think it’s an important watch. You don’t know how your actions will affect other people, and it could be highly negative. The other Netflix show I’ve recently watched recently is season three of Grace & Frankie. A highly underrated and hilarious show, giving an insight into the retired world – a must watch!
Back in November I spotted the Sabrina The Teenage Witch Boxset on Amazon, and when I didn’t get it for Christmas (despite how many hints I dropped to my mum) I spent two months putting it in and taking it out of my Amazon basket. In February, I bit the bullet and after finishing watching The Office – another excellent show to binge – in March, I started watching Sabrina The Teenage Witch. An easy watch, and a throwback from my childhood, this was a welcome addition to my box set collection and I definitely loved rewatching one of my favourite shows.
I love Queer As Folk, both the UK and US versions. They’re cult TV for a reason! Looking is along the same lines, looking at 20 (and 30) somethings dealing with gay life in the modern world. Whilst there are only 2 seasons and a film to round it all up, it was another of these cult shows that was entertaining to watch. Plus, I’m a big fan of Jonathan Groff so I’m happy to watch anything he’s in, no matter how good or bad it is.
I flipping love musicals, and Smash is the tale of how a musical is created. Through the writing, rehearsal all the way to awards season, it features a ton of incredibly talented Broadway stars that I love with all my heart. If you’re a big fan of the theatre then you need to give this show a chance, especially if you love a musical number or 5. Like Looking, it’s only two seasons so won’t take up too much time! Okay, no time at all – I watched it in 2 days when I was off work.
Back in 2009, I fell in love with Glee. I went to the live tour and as you can see, I own the DVDs too. The last couple of seasons were a little naff but I owed it to myself to see it through. I’ve rewatched some of it and it’s not quite as good as I remember it (despite crying more times that I care to admit), but the Darren Criss eye candy from season 2 onwards makes it a lot easier to watch. Plus, who doesn’t love a good sing song before you go to bed each night? I’ve not finished binging this yet, but I’ll manage before the end of the month for sure.
Television To Watch
I love the first two seasons of American Horror Story, the third was okay and then I sort of gave up so close to the end on the fourth. I’m determined to rewatch, and get past Freakshow. And hopefully even get through Hotel and Roanoke! Ryan Murphy is obviously a TV director and creator that I love, since he also helped create Glee.
On my list of shows still to watch that I don’t have the DVD waiting in the wings for me to watch is season three of Jane The Virgin (very funny if you’re yet to see it), Line of Duty (apparently a must watch according to many family members), and I’m dying to rewatch and get past the Frozen scenes in Once Upon A Time. I’m also looking at rewatching My Mad Fat Diary, which was one of my favourites when it was on television – I also love that it is set in the next town over to me…even if they do have completely the wrong accents.
I clearly have a varied taste in television shows, but I adore television. Which shows do you recommend? I’m always looking for new shows to add to my ‘to watch’ list!
