My Foray into High End Lip Products

Although I’ve put myself on a very strict spending ban at the moment, my trip to America introduced me to a new side of makeup – high end lip products. I’ve never really been that into lipsticks or glosses or anything until the last few months, mainly due to laziness (I could never be bothered to reapply colour throughout the day), but I’ve been slowly getting braver with lip products as this year has progressed.

High End Lip Selection

When I was in America, I bought a Sephora Gimme Some Lip Set (which I feel has since been discontinued because I can’t find it online) and I was hooked on high end lip products. Sure, these aren’t the most high end of products, but I need to start slowly. Until I known I’ll wear them, I’m not going mad at a Tom Ford stand.

As mentioned before, Sephora got me loving the high end lip products and in that set I managed to pick up a full sized Tarte Amazonian Clay Butter Lipstick in Coral Blossom (centre), a miniature Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita (second from right), a miniature Sephora Rouge Infusion Lip Stain in Peony, a miniature Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Crème in Je T’aime, a miniature Fresh Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment in Rosé, and a miniature Make Up For Ever Artist Plexi-Gloss in 202 (the latter four are not pictured). After this bargain buy at $25, I was hooked.

High End Lip Swatches

L-R: Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella, Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Liar, Tarte Amazonian Clay Butter Lipstick in Coral Blossom, Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lolita, MAC Matte Finish Lipstick in Velvet Teddy

Whilst in America, I also claimed the Sephora birthday gift which, this year, is a miniature Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella and a Nars Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien. Rikugien is a beautiful pink-nude but the real star of the show in Cruella. I am in no way a red lip wearer but this is the most incredible lip product in the world. I wore this on mine and my boyfriend’s anniversary a couple of weeks ago and it didn’t budge at all when we were drinking wine and eating our weight in food. I also picked up a Bite Beauty Luminous Crème Lipstick Duo miniature from Sephora in Fig/Date. Let’s be honest, once I got started I wanted to try everything, and that’s the best thing about Sephora. There are so many minis that you can try a bit of everything without breaking the bank.

After I was let loose in Sephora, I ventured into MAC. As I mentioned in my September favourites, I was very late to the MAC Lipstick party. Velvet Teddy is honestly one of the most perfect nudes I’ve ever tried and I am actually very ashamed of myself for not buying this sooner. I now understand the hype behind these lipsticks and this colour in particular.

High End Lip Selection

Since being home, I’ve not bought anywhere near as many lip products, but I did have a gander on the House of Fraser website and they had 10% off Urban Decay lipsticks. After Hannah talked about the Urban Decay Sheer Revolution Lipstick in Liar in her updated makeup collection video, it’s been on my radar, and with the discount I couldn’t resist. This is a very sheer ‘my lips but better shade’ and I’m so happy it’s in my collection.

As I said at the start of this post, I’m taking a break from spending, especially on lip products because I’ve spent a lot recently, but I’ll definitely be taking a lot of higher end brands into consideration when I’m after a new lippie.

Do you stick to drugstore lip brands like I normally would, or are you a sucker for a high end lipstick? Let me know what your favourites are in the comments below.

  • Great post! NARS Cruella looks great on you! I usually stick to high end makeup and skincare, but I have plenty of drugstore lippies too! My currrent faves for high end lip products would be Chanel, MAC and Dior.

    • Thank you so much. I have a new found love in lipstick which was something that never overly bothered me before, and since writing this post, I’ve bought two more MAC lipsticks. I’m lusting after the YSL Rouge Voluptes at the minute though – the packaging is gorgeous! x

  • Kat Von D’s Lolita looks gorgeous! And I love the Nars pencils from Sephora that they gave as a free gift!

  • Kathryn O’Connor

I’ve been dying to get my hands on one of the Urban Decay Matte Revolution’s, very jealous of you.
How are you finding the Kat Von D liquid lipstick? I’ve heard a lot about them but haven’t actually read any reviews on them yet.
Also, you look stunning in the picture you included, make up on point gal! xx

    • I really want UD 1993, it looks like the perfect brown nude for A/W! Also been looking at YSL Rouge Volupte in 03 which looks very similar in colour to 1993.

I love the Liquid Lipstick. It lasts all day, even through eating and drinking. It’s more drying than some matte finishes I’ve tried, but it’s not uncomfortable on the lips. I am definitely considering putting in a Sephora order to pick up some more.

      Thanks so much xx

  • That NARS lip pencil looks fantastic on you! xx

    • Thank you so much! Until recently, I very much stuck to my guns and wore nudes but I’ve been really enjoying experimenting with actual colour recently x

  • May Cho

Gosh, I can’t not splurge on lip productss, haha. I want to try that Nars lip pencil!, plus, it looks so good on you!

    • The Nars pencil lasted through a meal which included a lot of wine, so it’s a winner. The matte one has a lot better staying power than the satin one, but isn’t drying (amazing for a matte) x
