After being late on the bandwagon with Nivea’s Post Shave Balm, I’m even later on the bandwagon for Benefit’s Hoola Bronzer. I love a powder, whether it’s for mattifying, highlighting, blushing or bronzing, I am all over it. A couple of weeks ago I talked about my love of Nars Laguna, and how it’s one of my holy grail bronzers, but I’d always wondered what the hyped was over Hoola.
Upon one of my tri-weekly stops at Boots, I spotted a miniature Hoola for just shy of £10 at the till and I knew I had to buy it.
As I said, this is a miniature at 4g and retails for £9.95, which works out cheaper than the full size per 100g (£23.50 for 8g). It looks exactly like the full sized boxed powder, but just half the size. So if you’re in need of a restock of this bronzer, I’d definitely pick up a couple of these over the full size. You still get the brush inside like the rest of the boxed powders, and there is a small mirror.
My first issue is my own fault. As it is a smaller box, I find it difficult to get my normal bronzer brush inside. I currently use the Zoeva Luxe Sheer Cheek Brush for contour and the Real Techniques Powder Brush for an all over glow, and both of these are far too big to get a real amount of powder.
My second issue is the colour. It’s just so orange. I know so many people use this as their main contour colour but I don’t understand how. When I try, I look like I’ve applied a streak of a very poorly matched foundation to my cheek. It’s really disappointing to me as it’s so difficult to find a good matte bronzer, but this just isn’t it for me.
I’m going to continue to try this to see if I can work out why people love it so much. It is a nice consistency and blends reasonably well, but it’s just way too orange for a contour shade for me. I can just about make it work for me as an all over bronze but I do have bronzers I prefer for that. If all else fails I’ll stick it in my eyeshadow drawer and use it as a crease shade in the summer.
So this is definitely an overhyped product in my opinion, and Benefit definitely need to bring out a far less orange bronzer instead of bringing out hundred of tints that I don’t like either.
